ArcticWeb – A unique Geoportal for Norwegian Offshore Areas

Posted on August 21, 2010

Arctic Web is a geoportal were you can search, view and download vital information for the Norwegian Continental Shelf.  By combining data from multiple public sources, the user can obtain important information through one interface, and be ensured that the data is continuously updated.  Information can be retrieved by traditional search or through a map interface.  It is very easy to download data to your own GIS applications or other applications.

More than 100 relevant data themes from 14 different public data owners are made available through Arctic Web, and a number of additional data from various sources will be made available in the near future.  Arctic Web currently include public data from Norway,  but our vision is to include the other arctic petroleum provinces as well.  Anyone who are involved in petroleum related activities would benefit from ArcticWeb, and you will find information about:

  • • All petroleum activities, including geological information, seismic, drilling, well information, production etc.
  • • Key information about all operators and license holders.
  • • Important environmental data, such as spawning areas, protected areas, corals, seabirds etc.
  • • Ice and meteorological information.
  • • Emergency response resources.
  • • Relevant reports, publications, hearings and notifications.
Example: Map combining petroleum related information with spawning areas, aquaculture locations and protected areas.

Arctic Web is very easy to use.  Anyone can view Arctic Web by visiting www.arcticweb.com.  All non-commercial users can also receive premium features like downloading data, by signing up for a free non-commercial user account.

Arctic Web has been financed through a Joint Industry Project (JIP) with 6 major oil companies in Norway.  We are now delighted to invite other operators and license holders in Norway to participate in the Joint Industry Project.  JIP members will enjoy full access to Arctic Web as well as all downloading capabilities.  JIP participation will ensure that additional data themes are being included, which is beneficial for all of us.   Please contact Kjell-Are Vassmyr (kav@aconawellpro.com),

Arctic Web will also soon have a module for commercial data, where companies can offer their data and services to the Arctic Web user community.
