This article, which explains the Museum’s goals in developing this cutting-edge map, also goes into some of the technical details on how the map works. This gives readers interested in learning more about opensource GIS projects the opportunity to understand how we approached this bespoke project to meet the Museum’s requirements. The article also briefly discusses future development goals the Museum has for expanding the map to cover a greater geographic area so that information from other Oil and Gas Museums around Europe is included in the bigger picture.

Currently we are working with the Museum to included new layers and features for the current map.

The Article is in the December 2011 (Volume 14) issue of GeoInformatics and viewable online: An Interactive Petroleum Map

Do you have a GIS project you’d like to discuss with us? It starts with a conversation so contact us to discuss your ideas!

Last Spring we were awarded a tender to develop a well-log data tracking system for Statoil. That system, GeoTracker, has now been delivered to the customer. We are encouraged by the positive feedback we’ve been receiving, and are pleased to report that GeoTracker was delivered both on time and on budget.

About GeoTracker

GeoTracker, which is a Well-log Data Tracker, was created to simplify the well reporting process for Statoil. It facilitates reporting of well data to the regulatory authorities by providing functionality for monitoring it. This provides the broadest overview possible for tracking well-log data information, wherever it resides.

The system is based on KADME’s Whereoil framework and consists of two main components. The first manages reporting requirements, allowing administrators to define the entire reporting workflow. The second is monitoring the actual process, ensuring users can see the status of the reporting at any time. All tasks are tracked and shared with relevant parties, so you know if your data has been transmitted to PetroBank® , external partners, or other users for action.

Part of tracking well-log data is knowing where it is in the reporting process. GeoTracker makes finding this status easy. Tasks are assigned by an administrator to users on a role-basis, and these tasks are then automatically managed by an email-driven notification system. Users are always up-to-date on task statuses needing completion for an on time delivery to PetroBank and administrators or project managers have a clear overview of the process assuring them all required data is accounted for and delivered. With Whereoil’s functionality tasks are simple to locate as they can be looked up by any attribute, such as assignee, data type, due date, well name, and also via a calendar view.

They explained how GeoTracker ensures all well data is tracked at every stage in the well-reporting process – from Rig to Resource – and gave a beta demonstration.

Erin Lynch of KADME, and Arild Haugen of Acona, jointly made the case for the oil industry reducing risk in the Arctic through more accessible data. We used examples from ArcticWeb, information on current data sharing schemes in the Arctic regions, and mentioned regulatory landscape for companies hoping to engage in Arctic Exploration and Production. We suggested ways to increase the profile of data in this sensitive region.

It was another good time at this year’s ECIM conference in Haugesund, Norway! The IM world is growing ever more closely connected, and the ECIM was once again the right place to meet, share, and discuss the latest developments within our industry while at the same time have a great time. Attendees ranged from the familiar faces of the Norwegian oil & gas information management scene, to new faces from around the globe. We met a wide range of participants from Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia.

Just before the conference began we hosted a boat cruise to the islands of Røvær. We were closely watching the weather forecast with thoughts of an idyllic sunny September day in our minds. Imagine when we saw the warnings that a tropical hurricane would be touching down at the very point and time the cruise was set to depart! So we waited, watching, to see if the event could go on as planned.

Which it did. As is typical on the west coast of Norway, the weather changed. We still had choppy waves, wind, and rain hammering down, but we were able to don our ECIM rain hats and reach the islands in time for a nice lunch. We had fun, enjoying the food, drinks and networking out on the island. We hope those of you who bravely joined us did, as well! Thanks for joining us!

GeoTracker being presented by Anders Bager, Statoil, and Vasily Borisov, KADME. Here, a projector failure has occurred - but the presentation went on! Photo courtesy of Elena Zarbeeva at PGS.

During the conference itself our Director of Technology, Dr. Vasily Borisov, had the opportunity to co-present the GeoTracker well data tracking system with Anders Bager, Project Data Manager at Statoil. Anders and Vasily demonstrated this KADME-developed system, which automates the new business rules of data flows to create visibility in the well tracking process. They explained how GeoTracker ensures all well data is tracked at every stage in the well-reporting process – from Rig to Resource. The system includes an email-driven notification system which allows users to adhere to the reporting process and manage tasks.

During the plenary speech the following day, Lars Olav Grovik, Statoil’s Lead Data Management Advisor, discussed a range of issues related to reporting data to the regulatory authorities. GeoTracker, he said, is Statoil’s big hope for improving well data reporting to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate. We are encouraged by all of the positive feedback from this new tool, and are counting down the days until the system goes live at Statoil.

Vasily Borisov also gave a presentation on KADME’s Whereoil software to update workshop participants on the wide-range of applications powered by Whereoil technology. He spoke about EPIS, the Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos (ANH) of Colombia’s National Data Repository, which is powered by Whereoil technology. Vasily discussed how the capabilities Whereoil has built into the system provide enough ground and scalability to enable EPIS to grow, and will continue to be updated with new functionalities for years to come.

We are keen to share the experience of creating the new EPIS with other small-to-medium sized countries looking to build a National Data Repository, because EPIS is a success story on how to build a modern NDR. The new EPIS was executed on time and on budget, and end users can easily browse and search for data via the search interface or the map application. Please follow this link for more information on KADME and National Data Repositories.
