ArcticWeb is a joint-industry project that makes Arctic data accessible in one online search. The ArcticWeb geoportal allows users to search, view and download vital information on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.  By combining data themes from multiple public sources, users can obtain important information through one interface, and be ensured that the data is continuously updated.

Information can be retrieved by traditional search or through a map interface.  Registered users can easily download data to into their own systems, such as GIS applications and Excel.

Public Data and the Energy Industry. ArcticWeb is funded by the R&D units of six energy companies with current operations in Norway, including Statoil, ConocoPhillips, BG Group, ENI, Lundin, Shell and most recently  Spring Energy. ArcticWeb was originally envisaged for private use, but was opened up for free public use in 2010. This project relies on public data sources.

The Technology. ArcticWeb requires a robust web framework that can continuously harvest predefined information from the Key Data Owners, the reputable authorities and institutions that produce and maintain reliable and high quality information related to Arctic areas. We used our Whereoil software to accomplish this, creating the framework these companies require.

Data on the Map. Users searching for data on ArcticWeb can view data from diverse datasets layered on a map, essentially rendering non-interoperable resources interoperable. Information that was once difficult just to find is now available both by keyword search and directly from the map itself.

Data Themes. Today more than 100 relevant data themes from 14 different public data owners are available through Arctic Web, and a number of additional data from various sources will be made available in the near future. Currently users can find information about aquaculture localities, pipelines, recreational areas, shellfish farms, nature types, salmon fjords, wells, ice charts, fixed facilities, reports of all kinds, and so much more!

Currently only information on the Norwegian Continental Shelf is available, but the project aims to expand geographically into the other Arctic Regions. For more information, please visit www.arcticweb.com!
